I wanted to make a post about this for a while now.
Lady Gaga is not an original. Stop saying other artists are ripping off her ideas.
Here are some examples of things she claimed were her own ideas while actually there’s proof an other artist came up with it first.
The bubble dress. Kristeen Young did it first. She used to be an opening act for Morrissey and I assume she wore the dress there and Gaga visiting Morrissey’s shows frequently saw it and copied it.
The meat dress. Linder performed in a dress made of discarded chicken meat sewn into layers of black net, while The Crones handed out packages of leftover raw meat wrapped up in pornography. (copied from wikipedia) Now, that is a feminist statement. Unlike Gaga who probably said “kill that cow and make me a dress”
The lighting bold accross her eye. Dave Bowie. This is rather obvious and most people will probably know he did it first but I can imagine her 14 year old fans don’t know and think she came up with it.
Her 2009 VMA award dress, the red lace thing with the weird face mask. I forgot what band did that the year before but there was a band in 2008 (?) who wore red suits and had the same masks.
The rah rah gaga oh lala and shouting FAME FAME FAME…Morrissey is photographed in the 1980thies holding up a sign that reads “Morrissey is unreal, rah rah rah, on you, I love you”. And as Gaga said so herself…fame fame fame! is taken from the line in frankly mr Shankly where morrissey sings “Fame fame fatal fame, it can play hideous tricks on the brain”.
Then her claiming she is a feminist…Sorry but are lines like “bluffin with my muffin” and “lets have some fun this beat is sick, I wanna take a ride on your disco stick” exploding with feminist power? Also, always walking around half naked, being fondled by men, having a rapper carry you out the woods while you hang in his arms NAKED, advertisement in shopping windows. If Gaga wore jeans and a t-shirt, would it still sell?
I think artists as Tori Amos, Nancy Sinatra, Chrissie Hynde, Siouxie, Linder Sterling, Patti Smith, Tracy Chapman know much more about feminism and female liberation and equality than Gaga does. I’m not saying you’re a slut/trashy/whore if you pose naked, but it’s obvious Gaga does it to sell her music.
And then there’s all the pro GLBT talk. I got an icky feeling about that too. NOT because I think the GLBT community doesn’t need a voice or equal rights or that hate against this community should be tolerated. But I feel she says these things because she knows they’re popular statements and will sell her records to kids/people who are struggling with their identity.
Oh today someone told me she claimed to be celibate. HAH HAH HAH.
Music should be about a musician with a good voice and a band that can play live, not about “how to sell as much records as possible before this idol fades away”. Gaga has a good voice and she can play piano. I’d like to see the marketing facade and all the bullshit gone and hear what she does without that. To me, now, she’s just a big joke.
Glad to have this said.
Jeremy, you’re awesome, and yes it is true. Yes I expect a bunch of mindless sheep to unfollow me because they might feel offended for calling out their Queen, but it’s fine. In before someone says she’s original and has made quite a change in the music industry, no, she hasn’t.
If you think about it, what changes has she done? The outrageous outfits? Really? do they make her music more enjoyable? Because she’s just a ripoff of legitimate artist.
It also saddens me to see all those sort of Anarchist Punks creaming over Gaga. It pains me to say, you’re pretty much contradicting yourselves, and I’m not talking about the music, because you can listen to whatever you want, but when I say you’re contradicting yourselves, I’m talking about, you as participants of a movement in which you refuse to follow the status quo and ignore what the media dictates you how to act or what to do… yet you’re falling for the biggest media product, because this woman, is nothing but a marketing product.
Goodbye to those who want to unfollow me.

Pulling my shirt so you can notice it’s a Bowie shirt. Funny thing I dreamt about him last night and right now I’m listening to a Drive-in Saturday cover by my beloved Morrissey. Today’s been a good day.
